Notes: Autobiography by Dylan's 'last idol'. Vividly describes in harrowing detail Woody's childhood and life during the Great Depression. Illustrated with sketches by Woody. David Whitaker told the story of his turning Dylan on to this and other books in Telegraph 26, p. 33-34. Dylan read the book in college, and enthusiastically recommended it to his friends. Telegraph 45 tells of the discovery of Dylan's copy of the book.

It was made into a film in 1976, with David Carradine in the title role, an Academy Award nominated performance. It was later the basis for the play, Woody Guthrie's American Song by Peter Glazer.
